The Sounds Before Sunrise #2/30 - 2021

 Some nights when sleep
lingers beyond fingertips

and the vigor of overnight sets in

the patterns of nature

lift their veil

revealing themselves to the early riser

and the night owl

It is the first day of the week

Songbirds do not sing in darkness

but in the twilight before morning

as the stars fade and the space between them

warms from deepest void to faintest glow

their songs begin

a few, at first  - then a cluster, a chatter

and soon a twittering cacophony

ricochets from the invisible space between branches

the sound of earth coming alive again

on a new day

The stone is rolled away from the tomb

And I wonder what the birds sounded like

to them, in the pre-dawn hours

as they made their way to a tomb

they would only find empty

Whether the trills themselves proclaimed

He had risen

or were they stopped and silent

as even the creatures of the air

fell still in reverent moments

There was no body to be found

Did a breeze blow

Was the grass wet with dew

When they saw the stone moved

and the tomb open

was it bright enough to see inside

Did they step in knowing or unaware

Could they understand

in that moment

Did they believe their eyes

What kind of wonder was on their faces

as they bowed them to the earth

On the morning He arose

was there a trumpet blast

Did the earth shake

a grinding roll of boulder

against the hillside

The flash of lightning announcing

triumph over a grave

Or

With the veil already torn

and the crowds departed

was this a quiet awakening

slow and un-noticed by passers-by

And suddenly, radiant men on the hillside

told them, “Remember” and they did

As the sun rose

did the first birds of morning

burst forth from distant branches

proclaiming the resurrection

or merely stirring

unaware

seeing only the hillside

and the horizon’s pale glow

calling to one another

God’s promise

that any moment now

that the sun would be coming back
