Simon Peter Unwraps a Cadbury Egg #3/30 - 2021
The doors were secured
and it was not there
before we went to sleep
On the third day
after I’d denied my Lord three times
a basket was left in the upper room
and we do not know how
Who could have delivered it
without walking through the walls
this pastel basket filled with bright unnatural things
beans of pure honey
transparent grass that tangles and clings
foods unfamiliar to our simple fisherman tongues
Except for this one
metallic, yet familiar in shape - an egg
The metal only a leaf
peeling back, tearing like the finest paper
laid, no doubt, by some exotic creature
Within, a shell more brown than soil itself
melting to the touch between warm fingers
cracked open, revealing sticky white and yolk
sweeter than any honey
Three parts, each delicious yet overwhelming
Surely there is a metaphor here for the nature of God
The women returned from the tomb, and found it empty
Everyone is certain the two are related;
a basket of sugar
a missing body
This egg is so strange and unnatural
I fail to see how
